Match reports from Declan Teefy

Clare Cup - Round 3
Broadford 0-15
Sixmilebridge 0-15

Broadford and last year’s county finalists Sixmilebridge played out a low scoring draw on Friday evening that drew parallels with our previous Clare cup match.

Broadford lost Shane Taylor early on and Craig Chaplin followed so after to hamstring and  groin injuries respectively.

The “bridge” men had the better of the first half exchanges with Luke O’Holloran, Brian  Corry and David Kennedy getting the bulk of the scores which meant they led by eight  points at the interval with the score being 14-6. Broadford hurled in spurts and failed to gain any traction in this opening half.

Broadford in the second half with the elements seemed to be heading for a loss until we  garnered some much needed character and resilience and weren’t going to let this game peter out.

A 2 point haul from Mark Gunning ate into the deficit and a further 0-3 point haul from Donie Whelan in quick succession really propelled us back into the game. In fact, Donie’s last  point was excellently scored which stemmed from a superb hook by Aodhan O’Driscoll  when the “Bridge” tried to clear their lines.

A late free from an acute angle by Diarmuid Moloney gave us a share of the spoils.

Good second half performances from Conor O’Donnell and Mickey Vaughan propelled us back into the game.

A low scoring tie at O’Garney park ending on level terms.

Broadford: Cian O’Brien; Darragh Whelan, Davy Boland , Damian Keniry; Padraic Taylor  (0-1), Darren Chaplin (0-1), Cian Mulqueen; Cathal Chaplin, Michael Vaughan (0-1), Cian  Cremins (0-1), Diarmuid Moloney (0-6 :4 frees) , Craig Chaplin , Aodhan O’Driscoll , Shane Taylor, Donie Whelan (0-3);

Goal contributions from James Dillion and Aodhan O’Driscoll were the deciding factors in a closely fought contest.

Strong performances from Sean Phelan and Conor O’Donnell in the half back line, where they  were imperious over the hour. Jack O’Brien worked tirelessly at midfield with a very industrious performance.

Broadford Show Depth and Determination Across All Divisions in Thrilling Weekend of Hurling

11/4/2025

Clare Cup Division 1A – Rd 2
Broadford 2- 22
Inagh/ Kilnamona 1- 25

Broadford and last year’s county semi finalists Inagh/Kilnamona played out a half scoring affair last Saturday evening. With both teams having 2024 All Ireland senior hurling medalists in  Paddy Donnelan and I/K’s Eamonn Foudy on the field, this game was frantic from the off. The  aforementioned Eamonn Foudy’s puckouts with the elements really put us on the back foot in  the first half.

Broadford, despite losing Clare 20’s hurler Niall O’Farrell from 2024 and 2023 to a  hamstring injury early on he still left his mark with a well engineered goal to stem Inagh/Kil early onslaught. Shane Taylor followed soon after with the same injury but not before  signaling his intent with a well taken score.

The West Clare men had the better of the first half exchanges and they led by eight points at the interval when the score was 1-17 to 1-9.

If we were under the cosh in the first half the second half turned on its head. Broadford grew  incrementally into the game and showcased some super scores particularly from Cian Cremins and Cian Mulqueen. One noticeable standout performance from Donie Whelan who excelled  for Broadford on the day and finished the tie with 1-5 to his credit.

A high scoring tie at Broadford ended on level terms.

Finally, it was super to see Clare minor hurler from last year Michael Vaughan make his adult bow in this rip roaring contest. He contributed massively as a link man between  midfield and half forward line and really gave the West Clare men endless problems.

Broadford: Cian O’Brien; Darragh Whelan, Eoin Donnellan, Damian Keniry; Padraic Taylor, Paddy Donnellan, Darren Chaplin; Cathal Chaplin (0-1), Craig Chaplin (0-8 frees); Michael Vaughan (0-1), Diarmuid Moloney (0-1) , Shane Taylor (0-1); Oisin Kavanagh, Niall
O’Farrell (1-2), Donie Whelan (1-5);

Subs; Cian Mulqueen (0-1) for N. O’Farrell (inj); Cian Cremins (0-2) for S Taylor (inj), Davy Boland for Dara Whelan; Mark Moloney for M Vaughan; Aodhan O’Driscoll for D. Moloney

Junior League Division 4 – Rd 1
Broadford 1-15 O’C Mills 1-13

On Sunday morning our neighbours met once again to battle for points in this intermediate  league clash. Losing Jack Dillion early on to a calf strain allowed Clare 19’s panellist Aodhan O’Driscoll to enter the fray and he definitely made his presence known. He contributed 1-4 to Broadford’s tally and his pace was a constant threat throughout.
Aodhan tally went a long way to ensuring Broadford got off to a winning start.
Strong performance from Sean Phelan at centre back also paved the way.

It was also noticeable that this Broadford intermediate panel had a huge amount of subs on the bench which was impressive to see.

Team:

Junior League Division 8
Broadford 3-24   Ogonneloe 1-11

It was an especially  noticeable evening for many players from the victorious minor winning championship team of  2024 namely, Jack Lovett, Oisin Macmahon, Daniel Greene, Michael O’Donogue, Adam Flynn and John Moran. Players that hopefully will have further great days in the Broadford colours in the years ahead.

Broadford started like a train racing into a commanding 2-11 to 4 lead at half time. With all 23  players togged getting a run it was a brilliant start to the campaign. Eye catching goals from 18  year old John Moran and 41 year old Pádraig Hickey the pick of the bunch. James Dillion on the evening finished with 6 points to his name and Eoin Powell now fully recovered from his cruciate knee injury picking off 4 long range points.
