100% return from the May Bank Holiday

9/5/2025

Report by Declan Teefy:

Willwego.com Clare Cup 1A RD 5
Friday 2nd of May
Broadford 0-21
Clarecastle 0-18
Venue: Glenomra Park, Broadford

This was a well contested tie between two evenly matched sides in which a strong sun
made matters difficult for defences.

Broadford led by three points in front at half time when the score was 0-9 to 0-6 but the visitors were nearly back on terms as the game entered the final quarter.

Broadford then pulled four clear but Clarecastle hit back with two but time wasn’t on their side and the home side held on for victory on an evening when all six forwards shared in their impressive final tally as well as 0-3 from the bench courtesy of Diamruid Moloney and Aodhan O’Driscoll.

Oisin Whelan with six and Paul O’Connell with four were the chief scorers for the Magpies. The loss leaves Clarecastle bottom of Division 1A and Broadford inside the top half of the table.

This game ebbed and flowed throughout but Broadford definitely had the greater spread of scores and seemed to find the target easier. In fact at two stages in second half, Niall O’Farrell and Diarmuid Moloney had two excellent goal opportunities which weren’t despatched which gave impetus to their intermediate opponents in the final 10 mins.

Diarmuid Moloney's introduction at half time really gave Broadford greater fluidity in their play. It was noticeable down the right hand side of our defence with Darragh Whelan, Padraic Taylor and Moloney, really working in tandem when running the ball out of defence and creating diagonal balls where our inside line got excellent scores.

Lastly, Friday evening’s game also saw two absolute scintillating points in each half from the sideline inside the 21 from Oisin Kavanagh and a trademark Niall O’Farrell point which had to be seen to be believed.

Broadford: Roy Duffy; Darragh Whelan, Eoin Donnellan, Damian Keniry; Cathal Chaplin, Davy Boland, Padraig Taylor (0-1); Cian Mulqueen, Conor O’Donnell; Craig Chaplin (0-2 frees), Darren Chaplin (0-2), Michael Vaughan (0-2); Donie Whelan (0-3) Niall O’Farrell (0-6: 2frees), Oisin Kavanagh (0-2);

Subs: Diarmuid Moloney (0-2) for Cathal Chaplin; Mark Moloney for D. Keniry; Aodán
O’Driscoll (0-1) for D. Whelan

Monday 5th May
Broadford 1-19
Eire Og 1-10

Broadford continued their winning ways in this junior league campaign with a 9 point win over the Ennis side in Broadford, on this Bank holiday Monday evening.

An early 1-4 from James Dillion who continues his rich vein of form and 0-2 from Paul
O’Connell put us in the driving seat up to half time.
Our next match against Clarecastle will raise the bar higher in terms of what’s expected from this team. In the evening, strong performances from Ian Doyle, Daniel Greene and especially Gavin Brynes contributed 0-6 from play over the hour.

Only downside was the sending off of Paul Macnamara and his counterpart late on for what was a skirmish that required no more than a yellow.

Team as follows :
Peter O’Farrell
Ian Doyle
James Mason
Sean Doyle
Daniel Greene
Keiran O’Connell
Paul Macnamara
Keiran O’Connell
Michael O’Donoghue

Gavin Byrnes (0-6)
James Dillion (1-9)

Sunday 4th of May
Doora Barefield 1-16
Broadford 1-20

A return to winning ways for Broadford in this intermediate clash on Sunday evening in
Gurteen. Broadford led for most of this match and at half time it was 1-13 to 0-7 in favour of the East Clare men.
The stand out individual performance was the return of 1-7 from play for Diarmuid “Sparky” Whelan.

Further good performances from Sean Phelan and Mark Moloney as well as a couple of super scores from James Dillion showcased our dominance over “The Parish”.

A Easter Week of Ups and Downs!!

9/5/2025

 Report by Declan Teefy

Willwego.com Clare Cup 1A RD 4
Saturday 26th of April

St. Joseph’s Doora/Barefield 1-15
Broadford 0-16
Venue; Gurteen

Eoin Lahiffe’s goal for Doora Barefield just inside the final quarter proved to be the vital
score in this well contested tie at Gurteen on Saturday afternoon.

Broadford led by the minimum margin at the break when the score was 0-8 to 0-7.
Broadford, in reality were missing a plethora of regular starters with only 6 players been
retained from the draw with Sixmilebridge in the previous round.

Nonetheless, this new influx of hurlers showed plenty of skill and resolve in this evenly
matched contest. In fact, it was really progressive to see other players getting an
opportunity to play the highest league division in Clare hurling.

Strong performances in defence from Conor O’Donnell, Eoin Donnellan, Darren Chaplin, Cian Mulqueen and Craig Chaplin’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over were our standout performers against a team who will also contest for the Canon Hamilton in 2025.

Broadford will play Clarecastle on Friday evening next, where we will be hoping for a
greater return on the scoreboard tied in with a green flag or two!!

Broadford: Roy Duffy; Dara Whelan, Eoin Donnellan, Davy Boland; Cathal Chaplin, Darren Chaplin (0-1), Conor O’Donnell; Cian Mulqueen, Michael Vaughan (0-1); Craig Chaplin (0-11), Mark Moloney,Sam Cooper; Donie Whelan, (0-2) Oisin Kavanagh (0-1), Aodan O’Driscoll

Subs: Damian Keniry for Sam Cooper; John Moran for Al O’Driscoll

Morey Movement Hurling League Div 4 RD 3
Thursday 24th April
Scariff 4-14
Broadford 0-9

Venue : Scariff

Broadford went down badly in this intermediate clash in Scariff on Thursday evening last. Unfortunately, from the off we looked in trouble with Scarif’s direct running and overlapping style of play. Their ability to raise green flags was ultimately the difference between the sides in the evening. On the night Sean Phelan tried his best to stem the tide and cleared a lot of loose balls from centre back but we failed to penetrate the Scariff rear guard over the hour. Broadford still sit in a promising position in 3rd in the league table and with Doora Barefield next Sunday provides us with an opportunity to return to winning ways against a side still looking for their first points of this league campaign.

Hurling League Div 8 RD 3
Tuesday 29th of April
Broadford 4-24

Wolfe Tones 0-7

This performance in Glenomra park on Tuesday evening was a real reflection of the quality in this panel. With 25 players togged out, we raced into an unassailable lead and led by 2-14 to 0-3 at the interval.

Goals from James Dillion who scored heavily over the hour and Johnny Macnamra with a poacher's finish really signalled our intent. A knee injury to both Darren Macnamra and Jack Kelleher was the only downside on a lovely evening which was preceded with a new set of jerseys from local contractors Pat Doyle and Jp Cosgrove (GC: Gatecastle construction), to captain Keiran O’Connell, vice captain Sean Doyleand management team consisting of Declan Teefy, Mike O’Brien and Michael Kavanagh.

It was
a lovely gesture and I hope it will be the tonic for this team to go from strength to strength and to remain top of this junior league table.

Into the second half we furthered our lead with Paul Macnamara, Tom Marsh and Aonghus  O’Brien contributing on the scoreboard with the latter scoring a well taken trademark goal. Gavin Brynes introduction also served us as a reminder of his renowned physicality. On the evening we won the majority of duels through the field and this remained even with the introduction of 5 subs.

Good performances from Daniel Greene who’s really enhancing his reputation with his ability to read the game and overlap up the field, as well as Sean Doyle, Kieran O’Connell, Alan O’Brienand nearly a wonderful on the double strike from Ian Doyle which denied him the score of the evening.

Thrilling Finish as Broadford/Bodyke Edge Past Newmarket-on-Fergus in Junior/Division 5 Camogie Final

7/5/2025

Picture
In a gripping Junior/Division 5 Camogie League final on Monday, May 5th, 2025, Broadford & Bodyke took on Newmarket-on-Fergus (NMOF) at Father McNamara Park, delivering a match packed with drama, determination, and end-to-end action.
Broadford/Bodyke stormed into an early lead with three quickfire goals, setting the pace from the first whistle. But NMOF, refusing to be rattled, showed great resilience and steadily chipped away at the deficit. As the match progressed, momentum swung back and forth, with both sides trading points in a fiercely contested battle.

Broadford/Bodyke managed to hold onto their lead well into the second half, but with under ten minutes of regular time remaining, NMOF struck with a crucial goal. A narrow win for the blue-clad challengers seemed very much on the cards. However, Broadford/Bodyke showed great composure and heart, battling back in the dying moments to level the score: Broadford/Bodyke 3-12, NMOF 4-09.

The match headed into extra time, and once again both teams left everything on the field. It was Broadford/Bodyke who ultimately dug that bit deeper, edging ahead to seal a dramatic two-point victory on a final scoreline of 4-13 to 4-11.

Both teams displayed fierce determination and great skill in a thrilling game that could have gone either way. Congratulations to Broadford/Bodyke on a hard-fought and well-deserved win!

Broadford Minor Hurling Club Hosts Another Successful Easter Camp

6/5/2025

Picture
Once again, Broadford Minor Hurling Club hosted a hugely successful Easter Camp, welcoming East Clare’s budding young hurling and camogie stars for four fun-filled and action-packed days. The event drew an impressive crowd of around 170 children and was made possible by the dedication of over 50 volunteer coaches—whose commitment and enthusiasm are the backbone of this annual tradition.

This year’s camp featured a new highlight: a Fundamental Movement Day led by Paul’s ABCs, focusing on the athletic development of children through engaging physical activities that build essential movement skills.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Karen O’Connor and The Country Store for generously providing food and refreshments for our hardworking coaches. We were also delighted to welcome special guests Patrick Crotty and Paddy Donnellan, whose presence added an extra buzz of excitement for the young players.

Finally, sincere thanks to Broadford & Kilbane National School for the continued use of their excellent facilities, which play a vital role in making events like this possible.
We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

(Thanks to Paul O'Connell for the drone pictures).
