Broadford Drawing on Past U21 Success

2008 Winners Against Bodyke
Broadford will face Crusheen/Tubber on Good Friday, in the 2018 U21B Hurling Championship Final.  However, this is not the first time that Broadford have faced U21 glory.

In 2005 Broadford beat Corofin in the U21B final but lost to Crusheen in 2007. Success again though was not far off when Broadford beat Bodyke, this time in the 2008 U21C Final.

Look closely at the photos from these three matches and you might spot a few familiar faces now involved with the current U21 team, either as a past player now trainer or young supporter now seeking their own victories as a member of tomorrow's  U21 team.

Good luck to the Broadford lads, trainers and all the backroom support. Its been a great journey getting this far and the final tomorrow could make this a great Good Friday.

The match takes place in Cussack Park, Ennis with throw-in at 5.15 pm.  It would be fantastic to see as many Broadford supporters there as possible so please come along if you can.

Broadford U21 Semi-Final Victory Against Clonlara

26/3/2018

Picture
Thanks to a superb win over Clonlara on Sunday, Broadford have secured their place in the U21B final next weekend.

Broadford were four points ahead (1-06 to 1-02) just before half-time then two goals less than two minutes apart from James Vaughan gave Broadford a commanding 10 point lead as the teams headed off the field.

No win is secure though until the final whistle blows and although Broadford were never in any real bother during the second-half, Clonlara fought back hard and dented Broadford’s lead by four points without reply in the first ten minutes.

Thanks largely though to a robust defence by Broadford’s back lines which kept Clonlara from scoring additional goals in the second-half, Broadford maintained the lead throughout to secure victory with a final score of 3-11 to 1-10.

Every player fought hard throughout this game and showed true spirit and commitment.

Details of the final against Crusheen/Tubber (who beat Cratloe in the other semi-final on Sunday) to be confirmed.

In other news, Broadford beat Crusheen on Friday 23rd March in the opening round of the Intermediate League Division 3. John McNamara scored the goal and Aonghus O’Brien scored four points complemented by several long range scores for Eoin O’Brien. Also, an outstanding display by full back Aidean O’Brien.

On Sunday afternoon despite a good effort, Broadford lost at home to O’Callaghan’s Mills in the second round of the Clare Cup Division 1A.  The Mills beat Broadford 0-12 to 0-16

Lotto for Club Membership - Funding the Future

23/3/2018

Dear Members of Broadford Hurling Club, Supporters and Friends far and wide,

Broadford Hurling Club has a proud tradition of providing the best facilities possible for hurlers of every age and is an important focal point for our community.  We are fortunate that our club ground sits in the very heart of the village of Broadford and so provides an opportunity for people to easily come together for matches, training and other events in Glenmora Park.

As well as providing for our senior and minor hurlers over many years, the clubhouse and grounds are also heavily relied upon by Broadford Camogie Club and Broadford & Kilbane National School; making the use of our facilities truly inclusive and available for the widest possible participation.

In 2016 the club achieved a longstanding goal with the completion of its new covered stand and previous to this was the installation of a new perimeter fence. These massive improvements to our grounds have transformed the club. We now host hurling and camogie matches of the highest standard in County Clare and visiting clubs, supporters and spectators bring a special vibrancy to the village; as well as much needed trade and general exposure to what the area has to offer.  It has to be said, and the club can never be thankful enough, these sorts of project would not start without the massive generosity of all our members, players, and supporters as well as businesses from across the region.  The funding that was achieved in the past from the ten year membership scheme, as well as many other fundraising events, made these projects possible and keep the club afloat.

Broadford Hurling Club continues to look to the future however, and there is so much more it would dearly like to achieve to keep the momentum going for the good of its current and future hurlers and camogie players and support the wider community for all our benefits.

Funding has been, and unfortunately always will be, the single biggest issue for not only delivering on a vision for the future but indeed the clubs very existence.  The club is a wholly not-for-profit organisation and in order to just cover ever increasing operating costs (insurance, general field maintenance, fees etc.) a certain level of fundraising is a necessity just to keep going each year.

Yearly membership fees alone do not cover these running costs and the club does not want to have to increase the cost of membership in the future.

The club Executive is acutely aware that the country has been going through very difficult financial times in recent years and no more so than in rural Ireland.  So, to just keep coming out with an open hand looking for your generosity can only achieve so much.  With this in mind, new ways to help fund our club need to be looked at.

The club is looking to link membership to the Club Lotto and also promote the lotto as the primary means to fund the club and is asking everyone to consider their support of this.

Please find below details of the scheme covering a range of options and providing great value for money against the existing cost of weekly lotto tickets and for membership of the club.
Picture
Ideally cots will be collected by direct debit and the money raised will help to offset the ever rising costs of running our senior and minor clubs. Some examples from last year are listed below:
Picture

In addition, the maintenance and upkeep of the field this year is projected to be over €8,900. This will cover the costs of sand, fertiliser, spray and sodding for the goal mouths.

As well as providing the much needed funding to continue supporting our hurlers and camogie players, the club also hopes to use the money raised over the coming years to deliver some key projects; including:
  • A new mower to replace existing aged equipment and maintain the grounds to the highest standard estimated at €16,000
  • Purchase and develop a much needed training field desperately required for the winter months
Full support of the Club Lotto could help greatly to put the club’s finances on an even and predictable keel and the Executive would appreciate your consideration of this initiative. Who knows, you might be the next jackpot winner!

If you would like to support the Senior and Minor clubs through the lotto then the best way to do this is via direct-debit so please contact any Senior or Minor club officer.  Further details will also be available at a future registration evening.

Thank you for your continued support and here is to the ongoing success of Broadford Senior & Minor Hurling and Camogie Clubs.

U21B Win Against Clooney Quin

12/3/2018

Picture
Broadford secured a win in their first match of the season on Sunday, playing against Clooney Quin in Whitegate, in the U21B competition.

The first half was an evenly matched affair and with two frees for both teams the scores stood level fifteen minutes in to the match. Three unanswered points from play immediately in to the second quarter of play gave Broadford a three point lead as Broadford seemed to be picking up the pace. A point from a free for Clooney Quin moments later though was the first point in a run of four straight points that helped give Broadford’s opponents a one point lead at the end of the first half but thanks to a point from Sparky Whelan in extra time would have extended to a two point lead. Half time score 0-06  to 0-07.

The second half was a more energetic half all together for Broadford. A free for Clooney Quin opened the second half scores but Broadford responded seconds later with a point from play. A goal from Sean Phelan set up after Darren Chaplin won possession of the ball for Broadford between the hotly defended 10 and 13-metre lines put Broadford ahead again and a run of five frees taken by Niall O’Brien and point from play Jack Dillon gave Broadford a healthy 8 point lead twenty minutes in and the game had definitely turned around in Broadford’s favour.

Broadford gave away a subsequent free but a second superb goal, this time from James Vaughan, set up again by a pass from Darren Chaplin for James to send to the back of the net from behind the 10-metre line sealed Broadford’s victory with just six minutes of regular time left.  Clooney Quin took the last two points of the match but at this stage the job was done.

Full time score 2-13 to 0-11.

Broadford will meet O’Callaghan’s Mills in the next round in what will surely be a challenging match.
