The Under 18 / Minor B shield final scheduled for Wednesday has been changed to Thursday 1st September. Broadford will meet Kilmaley in Éire Óg. Throw-in at 6pm. The Junior girls play the second round of the Championship when they play Wolfe Tones on Sunday 4th September. The match takes place in Wolfe Tones camogie field at 12-noon. Good luck to all the girls and trainers. Broadford met Ruan in the Clare Cup Division Two / Intermediate League final on the evening of Thursday 25th August in Gurteen. Ruan seemed to make the better start out of the gate and within the first minute of play took an opportunity for goal but the ball was deflected off the hurley of Sean Phelan to deny Ruan an early psychological blow to Broadford. Ruan however pressed ahead taking the first two points of the match, the first from play and the second for a 65 and the gauntlet had been thrown down. Broadford were not long in finding their stride though and achieved a run of seven scores, including a goal from Cailean Cox after he had just sent one over the bar in the previous minute. Broadford’s rate of scores was also helped after winning the puck outs after Ruan sent a number of balls wide and once the ball was possession of Stiofain MacMahon, who with his speed proved highly effective at out pacing the opposition down the wing and took the opportunity to either send the ball over the bar or pass the ball on for his team mates to finish the job on several occasions. (1-06 to 0-03). For the rest of the first half both teams continued to battle it out and seemed more or less evenly matched. Ruan came as close it could possibly be to a lucky goal but Broadford goalie Alan McMahon kept the ball from going over the goal line by the narrowest of margins before sending it back out to play. However with a further six points for Broadford and four for Ruan you could easily have been forgiven for thinking that the final had been won in the first half. Half time score 1-12 to 0-08. The second half almost played out to tell a different story however. With six minutes down before first score, Ruan had a straight run of five points all from play, helped by their success at winning every puck out and this put Ruan just two points behind. Broadford had to wait until the 13th minute and a 65 from Cathal Chaplin and a free from Craig Chaplin to break Ruan’s run. (1-14 to 0-13). For the next ten minutes, Ruan continued to nip at Broadford's heels scoring points from two fortunate frees and from play. Not helped by playing in to slight breeze, Broadford suffered a high rate of wides which prevented Broadford from running away with the game but Broadford were able to counter Ruan’s scores enough to keep Ruan from narrowing the lead to anything less than two points. A goal for Ruan again seemed inevitable with play again concentrated close to the Broadford goal during several periods of play. Danny Reddan’s boot delivered a remarkable save from a frontal onslaught that could have provided the final turning point for Ruan. With 28 minutes down and back to four points between the teams, Cathal and Craig Chaplin and Donie Whelan delivered the final three points of the match to put paid to Ruan’s efforts to turn the game around. Final score 1-20 to 0-17 This was a final worthy of two good teams that have delivered some great performances over the competition, with the final spoils going to Broadford who had an unbeaten run through-out. Broadford and Kilkishen met in the Under 18’s camogie semi-final on Wednesday evening in Broadford. Catherine Donnellan captained the team and led a strong backline that proved effective at preventing Kilkishen from creating too much of a dent in the scores that were being raked up by Broadford. Aoife Vaughan and Zoe O’Keefe provided the express delivery service through the middle of the field dispatching the ball effectively to the forwards to send in to the net or over the bar consistently throughout the match. Final score 7-15 to 0-7. After some outstanding performances by the Broadford hurlers in this year's Clare Cup Intermediate League, the team plays in the final against Ruan this Thursday, 25th August.
Broadford played and won nine matches in the league this year, including their match back in May against Ruan when the Áth Leathan lads won 0-21 to 2-12. The stakes are high and the final in Gurteen tomorrow is sure to be an exciting and tough match. So, come along to Gurteen and give your support to Broadford. Throw-in 6:15pm. Áth Leathan Abú! The second round match of the Hurling Intermediate Championship between Broadford and Inagh-Killnamona, that was to be played today, was called off a the last minute as Inagh-Killnamona was unable to field a full team.
Now awaiting confirmation of whether Broadford will receive a walkover or if the fixture will have to be re-scheduled. Broadford and Clooney faced each other in the first round of the Junior A Championship on Saturday 20th August. With the match played for much of the time in driving rain, both teams had more than just each other to contend with but by half-time Broadford had established a healthy lead with the score at 5-02 to 0-02. During the second half, Broadford went on to score six a further six goals and two points to set their win in stone. Aoife Vaughan and Zoe O’Keefe’s transport of the ball through the mid-field, fending off Clooney at multiple turns set up points for Moya Marsh McMahon, Niamh Mulqueen and Aoife O’Brien. Caroline Fortune Moloney playing full forward, was denied at least two goals of her own by the Clooney goalie but thanks to her domination around the square and accurate back passing also created as many goals for her team mates as she was denied. Clooney fought hard throughout creating plenty of scoring opportunities of their own but were just unable on this occasion to convert their efforts in to points with the final score of 11-04 to 0-2 far from properly representing the visitor’s gutsy determination . Well done on a really convincing start to the championship for the Broadford girls. Broadford will meet Inagh-Killnamona in the second round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship on Sunday 21st August. The match takes place in Kilkishen with throw-in at 4.00pm. Good luck and all support welcome! Broadford starts its Junior A Camogie Championship campaign with a home match tomorrow, Saturday 20th August. The team takes on Clooney with throw-in at 10.00am. Good luck girls! Broadford played Crusheen in Sixmilebridge last Wednesday in the third-round of the Junior A Championship. Crusheen got off to a strong start with four points in the first ten minutes of play. Jack O’Brien opened Broadford’s account with a fine puck over the bar from play just out from the Broadford dug out. A goal from Michael Hogan in the 16th minute brought Broadford level (1-01 to 0-04). Two further points from play from Dara Corcoran and Seanie Casey had Broadford ahead just two minutes later. Halfway through the first-half Boadford had the Crusheen back line under pressure to the right of the Crusheen square. Niall Moloney won the ball and made a short pass back to Michael Hogan. With Crusheen launching towards Michael from all angles and little to no room to manoeuvre, the ball was sent to the back of the net from the corner of the square with devastating effect from Michael’s boot (2-03 to 0-04) Broadford went on to score another four points, that would have been five but for a disputed point from Declan Teefy, with just two in response from Crusheen; to leave the field a healthy seven points ahead by the half-time whistle (2-07 to 0-06). Broadford looked to continue where they had left off in the first-half but the first scoring opportunity over the bar went wide as did a free from between the 65-metre lines for Crusheen. Crusheen were back in the 65-metre territory some minutes later, with another free that was dropped just outside the Broadford square with Crusheen clearly going for goals but the ball slipped through the fingers of the Crusheen forward who tried to catch the ball only for it to be retrieved by Broadford’s Jack Dillon who took it on a run and pucked it back up the field. However with Crusheen not looking to give Broadford and easy ride, a Crusheen puck-out found its way to their number 14 in the midfield who sent it on to number 12 where from just outside the Broadford square and he sent it to the back of the net to score a crucial goal and narrow Broadford’s lead (2-07 to 1-06). A point from a Teefy free after Jack O’Brien was taken down in a foul during a ducking-and-diving solo run was the first of three scores in a row for Broadford as Crusheen were putting the Broadford backs through their paces during which a catch for goalie Willie Hayes during dangerously close play in the square helped to prevent a second goal for Crusheen but this was not the last near-goal experience. With the score at 2-10 to 1-06 and 15 minutes down, Crusheen drew from something deep and went on the rampage sending four balls over the bar with the fourth from a free at 20-minutes down and putting just one goal between the two teams 2-10 to 1-10. With Crusheen wining another puck-out the ball was back in the Broadford square just when Broadford needed it to be somewhere else. Willie Hayes was drawn out of the goal in order to keep the ball out of the net and Aidan O’Brien rushed in to take his place. With Aidan keeping sentry in the net as if it was meant to be, Crusheen broke the ball free and went for goal still inside the square. Aidan reached his hurley high to make a fantastic save, caught the ball and pucked it back out. A moment of play that sounded a collective Broadford sigh of relief but the game was not over! Crusheen took another point from a free and another from play by 25 minutes. Both teams continued to throw everything they had and with just a point between them either could have broken away to deny the other the win by a few points and mote but despite the ferocity of play there were no further points and Broadford narrowly held on to their lead for an eventual win by one point. Final score 2-10 to 1-12. What a match! Congratulations to the Broadford hurlers who brought the Tony Marsh Cup home after their win against Clarecastle in the final this evening in Glenmora Park, Broadford. A close score at the end 2-22 to 1-23. A big thank you to all the teams that participated in this year’s Tony Marsh Tournament and to all the Marsh family for their continued support. |
