Junior A Championship Win Over St. Joseph's

30/8/2017

Broadford needed to win their Junior A Championship match against St. Joseph’s Doora/Barefield on Sunday 27th August. Unlike with the Connor McGregor’s bout just a few hours earlier, there would be no hefty consolation prize for coming second in this match!

Ten minutes in to the match, which was being played in Tulla, Broadford were up by one point 0-03 to 0-02.

Having been denied two early goals, the first with the ball going wide off the wrong side of the net after a close range shot from a difficult angle and minutes later the second being deflected by the St Joseph’s goalie, Niall O’Brien raised the green flag in the 12th minute. The goal was set up after a St. Joseph’s free was intercepted by Jack Dillon, the ball retrieved form the subsequent ruck by Paul Moloney and then pucked up the field to O’Brien to deposit in to the back of the net.

By 24 minutes Broadford had added four more points (two from play and a free from Nial O’Brien and one from play from Seanie Casey) with St. Josephs adding three points to their own tally (1-07 to 0-05). A further goal then followed, again from Niall O’Brien, smoothly set up after Jack O’Brien gained possession of the ball from a ruck towards the centre of the field, delivered a short hand pass back to Seanie Casey to then puck to John MacNamara on the far side of the field who final finally sent the ball towards and over O’Brien who was well positioned just beyond the 13-metre line and able to clean up the subsequent lose ball.  Running straight through the approaching goalie as he charged towards O’Brien from the edge of the square he was not able to prevent him from slamming the ball in to the open mouth of the goal.

Three further points from play (John MacNamara, Paul Moloney and Niall O’Brien) with just one from St. Josephs gave Broadford a commanding lead by half-time 2-10 to 0-06.

St. Josephs came back fighting in the second half and took the first point in the first minute of play and then went on to score a further two points before Broadford were able to respond with a  point from Paul Moloney in the 13th minute with Broadford having missed a free earlier on.

Broadford were able to hold their lead throughout the second half thanks, in part, to maintaining a tight defense as St Josephs mounted several direct assaults around the Broadford square, culminating with Goalie Willie Hayes deflecting at least one ball aimed at the net from play. Two frees awarded against Broadford and aimed at the net from the same spot 13-metres out and just left of the goal would have put a dent Broadford’s lead but on each occasion the ball was kept out of the net, kept in play and eventually cleared.

More wides in the second half than the first prevented Broadford from extending their lead by the end of the match but with thee additional points earned from frees (one from Ciaran Corcoran and two from Niall O’Brien) and one more from play from O’Brien; Broadford took the match with a final score of 2-15 to 0-13.

Broadford Qualify for Minor B Camogie Final.

Broadford had a convincing win over Whitegate in the semi final last Wednesday. A huge team performance was helped by the very dominant half back line of Alexandra Troy, Moya Marsh McMahon and Emma Spaight . Up front, Annalee Marsh hit a hat trick with Aoife Vaughan, Aoife
O'Brien and Susan O'Shea contributing additional scores.  Broadford midfielders were always on top ensuring the ball kept going in the right direction for Broadford. Final score 0-07 to 4-12.

The final will be a much stiffer affair against Éire Óg and having beaten Broadford in the group stages will be favorites to take the title. That said, this is a title this group of girls would love to get there hands on and do deeply deserve.

The Broadford U15's played a bruising match against Éire Óg on Thursday night in Shannon.

The match was a replay from Monday's knockout blitz which left the teams level; Éire Óg 1-01 to Broadford 0-04.

On Thursday night though, Broadford shone through to win on a healthy scoreline of 4-06 to 2-02.

The girls are now through to the semi-final against Scariff-Ogonnelloe this Tuesday evening. The match will be played in Gureen with throw-in at 6.30pm.

Good luck girls!

All support welcome.
