Tough Going in the Under 21C Camogie Final

21/11/2016

Broadford met Scariff/Ogonnelloe in the U21 C camogie final on a cold Saturday afternoon. The match took place in aptly named Whitegate with snow visible on the surrounding mountains.

Scariff/Ogonnelloe went on the offensive from the beginning in a match that saw Broadord’s back lines tested ferociously and regularly.  Scariff/Ogonnelloe took the first point of the match from a free in the 5th minute and were denied a second minutes later when the ball went wide. Broadford won the puck out and Aoife Dillon took the ball down and in front of the stand and passed to Niamh Mulqueen some 30-mentres out and transported the ball through the few gaps in the field, to finally send it over the bar and even the score. Scariff/Ogonnelloe missed a free in the 13th minute and then a goal after Broadford gaolie Aoife Boland made the first of numerous saves from tight play in and around the square. For all their efforts, Scariff/Ogonnelloe suffered a third wide in a row after going for goal following on from successfully winning the ball from a Broadford side line. The next few minutes however belonged to Broadford and gave the girls the chance to show their opponents what they were truly capable off. Aoife Vaughan won possession of the ball after a hotly contended puck-out and made a characteristic charge down the middle of the field, passing the ball on to Aoife Dillon in relay fashion and then on again to Niamh Mulqueen. The ball was keenly fought for in front of square but Niamh saw an opening and sent it in to the net to delight of the Broadford supporters. Less than two minutes later, Broadford scored again from pay, this time with a point from Aoife Vaughan, and Broadford were four points ahead (1-02 to 0-01).  Scariff/Ogonnelloe took the last point in the first half to reduce their deficit to three points in the 24th minute.

Broadford showed huge spirit in the first half and showed that once in possession could follow through to score.  Scariff/Ogonnelloe continued inthe second half to dominate though and helped by a notable ability to swoop in from seemingly nowhere to steel the ball and by keeping Broadford’s half way line under constant guard and surrounding them whenever in possession, went on to win the match 2-03 to 4-06. On Broadford's part however, Aoife Dillon scored a superb goal from play 2o-meters out and Moya Marsh McMahon, Aoife O’Brian and Catherine Donnellan and the rest of the back lines continued to battle hard throughout ensuring that Scariff/Ogonnelloe had to persevere for every single score.

Congratulations to Scariff/Ogonnelloe on their win and well done to Broadford for putting up a valiant fight and for a great game of camogie.

Camogie U21 and U14 Update

5/11/2016

The replay of the Broadford v Clarecastle U14B cup final has been pushed to Monday, 7th November and will be played in Gurteen with throw-in at 5.45pm

The final, which ended in a draw, was originally played in June under sweltering conditions. Whilst the weather might be just a little different now, the heat will surely be turned up on the field as the teams battle it out to bring this competition to a close.

As one competition finally draws to a close though, another one starts. The Broadford U21's are in action on Sunday 6th November with a home match against Tulla.  Throw-in is at 1pm.

The best of luck to both teams and all support welcome.
