Broadford Deliver Win Against Cratloe

5/9/2016

Picture
Broadford met Cratloe in the third round of the Intermediate Championship on Saturday 3rd September in Sixmilebridge.

Donie Whelan opened the account for Broadford with one over the bar in the first six seconds of play and Cratloe soon responded with a point from play of their own. Both teams continued to make the most of the good weather conditions and provided the small but loyal band of supporters from both clubs with an enjoyable first half. With 29 minutes down Broadford had scored a further six points from play and one from a free. The points were hard earned though as the Cratloe backs proved hard to outmanoeuver and accurate passing was the only remedy. An artful example was seen with Broadford's 4th point after Donie Whelan, Cailean Cox and Diarmuid Moloney teamed up to get the ball through the midfield and then around the square in relay fashion and finally over the bar.

In the other direction though Broadford gave away four frees to Cratloe with the boys in blue taking just one from play (0-08 to 0-06).

Cratloe, just minutes after taking their fourth free, returned the favour to Broadford to give one of  Broadford’s mighty free takers, Cathal Chaplin, a shot at the posts but from beyond Broadford's 65-m line. Chaplin however created the bigger prize and the ball dropped from the sky to outside the corner of the square where Broadford’s Cailean Cox, Donie Whelan and Diarmuid Moloney were tightly marked and outnumbered. Breaking free, but still caught between the Cratloe corner-back and goalie, Moloney with an outstretched hurley was not prevented from intercepting the ball that was going wide and instead deflected it in to the open goal. The goal for Broadford was the last score in the first half and sent Broadford in to the dressing rooms with a five point lead. (1-08 to 0-06).

Whilst both teams were off the pitch the weather took a change for the worse and a heavy rain shower, driven by a strong cross-winds swept in from the town-end of the pitch which saw the subs and the rest of the side line congregation squeezed in to the dugouts for what little shelter was available. Declan Teefy and Nial Moloney however kept spirits high with demonstrations of their wet weather hurling skills!

Coming back  to the pitch set in a different world to the one they left behind, with squally showers and a strong wind across the pitch from the stands now the order of the day, the dynamics of the match also changed. DonieWhelan went for the first point of the second half as in the first but the ball went wide. The first point came from a 65 taken by Padraig Hickey and the second from a play, the ball sent low over the bar, by Cathal Chaplin. With one point from play sandwiched in the middle for Cratloe, Broadford's Craig Chaplin took the next two points; the first set up from a 65 from Padraig Hickey after he pucked the ball a short distance across the pitch to Chaplin who was aligned between the posts  and the second from a free. Broadford had extended its lead to 8 points (1-12 to 0-07).

Coming up to 15 minutes into the second half and as the sun started to break through, Cratloe seemed to find their form managing to keep much of the play down the Broadford end of the pitch and the work cut out for all the Broadford backs. Each team would then to go on to score four points apiece from play including points each from subs on this outing, Stiofain McMahon and Darren Chaplin. Interspersed however, Broadford gave away four more frees that enabled Cratloe to dent Broadford’s lead but not enough to deny the win. Final score 1-16 to 0-15.

Broadford had already qualified for the quarter-final which will be played in two weeks’ time but were not going to let that stop them for going for the win on this occasion which they indeed delivered.

Super Minors run the Magpies close in Friday night cracker.

Broadford/Smith O'Brien Minor A team played a much fancied Clarecastle team away last evening in what was to turn out to be a heroic performance from this young team. Clarecastle topped their group and on the way had wins over Cratloe, Inagh/Kilnamona and a comprehensive win over Bodyke/O'Callaghans Mills. With a number of players unavailable and pulling three players from the U15 team the signs weren't looking promising.
Clarecastle had a strong wind behind them from the start but it was an inspirational point from Diarmuid Whelan that set the tone for Broadford/Sob. The work rate of the younger players such as Conor Phelan and Paddy Donnelan raised the spirits of the large Broadford/Killaloe support. Conor left his mark (literally) on the Clarecastle team. New helmet required. There was no way through on goal in the first half with stellar performances from Jack Dillon, Evan McNamara and Stephen Howard. Broadford found it hard to win puck-outs with the strong wind but it was felt if they could keep the scoreline manageable until half-time that they would be in with a shout. It was David O' Shea's excellent free taking and points again from Diarmuid and Stephen Howard that kept the scoreline ticking over. The first half defensive display was epitomised by a thundering shoulder by Dara Whelan on 1 of the Clarecastle forwards who came at high speed in on goals. Broadford were well in touch at half-time and it was all to play for.
The scores were tit-for-tat at the start of the second half and with great puck outs and good saves from JC McMahon things were looking up. Broadford stepped up the pressure after Clarecastle finally got a break through on goal. Scores from Cian Cremins, Eoin Power, Diarmuid Wheland and David O' Shea had temperature levels rising and the scoreline creeping ever closer to a result for the away team. The forwards ran it close to a goal on a number of occasions with a strike from James Vaughan going inches wide. Owen Powell and Connor Phelan worked tirelessly and broke great ball for David O' Shea to score on a number of occasions. Clarecastle were rattled at this stage but the clock was against Broadford/Sob who fell just short with 1 goal between the teams. The most impressive thing about this team was the spirit and fight of these young players when against all odds, playing a team seemingly physically stronger in size in most areas they never gave up and were minutes from a Minor A Semi-final. Heroic performance again from this team. Super year lads. Well done. You did your clubs proud.
