Minor A's through to Semi-Final with win over Clarecastle

18/8/2015

Broadford/Smith O' Brien's produced a dazzling second-half performance on Friday evening to book themselves a Semi-final championship place on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-9. The game started tentatively for both teams, neither team taking control of the game. Each team traded scores in the early exchanges with Mikey O Shea, Darren Chaplain, Matthew Troy and Eddie Burke all contributing scores. It was the Broadford/SOB backs that proved themselves in both halves to display man-of-the match performances. Most noteworthy were Michael Hogan and Cathal Stritch. Clarecastle did get a run of scores mid-way through the first half and it looked like the game could go away from Broadford/Sob. It was however the home team that pushed on just before half-time and there was little to separate the teams when the first period ended.
The second half started in the same pattern. Broadford/SOB's took their chances and started to pull away. David O' Shea having a superb game in the corner-forward position that led to his goal that put the game out of reach. Darren Chaplain continued his excellent free-taking and an inspirational long-range score by Seán Phelan drove the team on. Seán Considine deservedly got on the score sheet and was a real threat up front. Some excellent point taking by Mikey O' Shea crowned a dominating second-half performance from the team. A semi-final place awaits in a few weeks.

Broadford surge ahead in second half against Corofin

10/8/2015

Broadford played Corofin in Newmarket-on-Fergus on Sunday, in the second round of the Intermediate Championship and finished with a decisive win under their belts.

The general feeling seemed to be that the match could “go either way” and that sentiment characterised the first half well. Craig Chaplin scored the first point of the match in under a minute and this was closely followed by a point from a free taken by Padraig Hickey. For the next 15-minutes the players slipped n’ slided on the damp grass and equally the score line slid from a lead, to draw, to behind, and then back the other way again on a number of occasions. Both teams seemed well matched with either just waiting to pull away from the other. With another four points from frees and four from play, Broadford held Corofin to a just a one point lead at the end of half time: 0-10 to 0-09.

The second half started largely as the first had played out with both sides trading points, with Corofin taking the scores level on two occasions within the first six minutes (0-12 to 0-12). Then in the seventh minute, Eoin O’Brien started Broadford on a good haul of 7 points in succession; five from play (E O’Brien, Darren Chaplin, Hickey); and two from frees (Hickey). Then Hickey broke away on a solo run from the half-forward line all the way to just right of the Corofin goal and lashed the ball in to the back of the net to add to the burgeoning lead for Broadford (1-19 to 0-12). Despite heightened tensions and tetchy off the ball exchanges between both sides, Broadford managed to hold on to their lead and finish the game with one more goal and three points to just three more from Corofin. Final score 2-22 to 0-15.

Well earned draw for U16's away to Ballyea

9/8/2015

Broadford/Smith O' Briens pulled off an incredible second half performance against Ballyea to earn them a draw on a scoreline of 4-10 to 3-13.
The game had an early start (10 o' clock) and it was Ballyea who started the game the better and were well on top in the early stages of this encounter. Although Jamie Butler and J.C. McMahon picked off some good scores Broadford/SOB found themselves 10 points down late in the first half. The team kept plugging away with strong forward play from David Boland and further scores from J.C. and Niall Moloney and finished the half 8 points down.
The Broadford/SOB team that came out in the second half was a different team. Conor Phelan moved out the field and won some vital possessions bringing in Cian Cremins, Niall Moloney and Jamie Butler. Goal chances came easier and with 1 each from Niall Moloney J.C. McMahon and Jamie Butler Broadford/Sob were in the ascendency. The backs fought for every ball with stand out performances from the likes of Cian Mulqueen who held firm on a number of occasions to snuff out any goal threats. It was only with the last puck of the game that Ballyea pulled the game back to a draw. Altogether the team showed massive character to fight back in the second half and did themselves proud with a well earned draw. They now play Tulla in the Quarter Finals.

Broadford Juniors still all to play for

9/8/2015

The Broadford Junior team played Inagh/Kilnamona yesterday evening in Sixmilebridge.

Inagh/Kilnamona played well and kept Broadford’s attempts to take command of the field at bay for most of the game. Twenty minutes in to the second half, and with a score line of 0-14 to 0-08, Broadford’s chances of turning the game around seemed bleak. However a goal from Seanie Casey energised the Broadford team and reduced the deficit to 3 points (0-14 to 1-08).  The teams then traded points preventing Broadford from reducing the gap further. Final score 0-16  to 1-10.

With one round left though, the Broadford juniors still have all to play for.
