Broadford Hurling and Camogie Weekend Round Up

23/5/2017

Picture
On Friday evening  Broadford played Éire Óg away in their camogie league match. Broadford played very well in the first half and were ahead by the half time whistle. Éire Óg 1-05 Broadford 3-04.  A stronger home team emerged though in the second half and achieved some very well taken points to finally win the game. Éire Óg 2-16 to Broadford 3-06.

On Saturday evening in the Intermediate Hurling League, Broadford played at home when they met Crusheen.

Crusheen got off to a strong start with two goals in the first six minutes of play but once Broadford found their form both sides battled it out hard in what was an exciting first half. Thanks to an uninterrupted run of eight points that helped to counter Crusheen’s early gains, the first half ended level. Broadford 2-10 Crusheen 3-07.

Picture
Although Broadford took the first point of the second half, Crusheen sandwiched a goal between a point from a free and point from play to establish a lead again in the first seven minutes. Another addition of eight straight scores, this time from five over the bar and a goal helped keep Broadford well and truly in the game though. Despite the visitor’s best efforts, Broadford went on to claim the victory. Broadford  3-19 Crusheen 4-11

On Sunday evening in the first match of a double-header in Broadford, the U14 lads were out meeting Crusheen in their second visit to Broadford this weekend. Broadford managed to stay ahead throughout the first half and goals from James Quintuite and Nial O'Farrell helped to secure the lead at half-time against a confident Crusheen side. Broadford  2-05 Crusheen 1-06.

Picture
Broadford played a blinding second-half and in a match that saw every member of the panel participate, the lads went on to win and secure their place in the semi-final.
Broadford  5-18 Crusheen 1-07.

In the second match of the evening, as the weather was turning cold and windy, the ladies were out again in their league match against Whitegate.  Broadford won the toss and made a good decision to play with the wind in the first half and this helped them to build up a very healthy lead by the end of first half-play thanks to goals and points from across the Broadford panel. Broadford  8-17  Whitegate  0-01.

Picture
Not imparted by this score is the strong and courageous performance of the Whitegate goalie who, regularly under siege, none the less made numerous impressive saves noted by everyone on the sidelines.

Broadford continued to dominate in second half and went on to win the match. Broadford 11-27 Whitegate 0-03

Broadford also met Wolf Tones in the Junior B league on Sunday morning.  Spurred on perhaps by their crisp new gear on its first outing, the visitors went on to win by one point in a well played match. Broadford 2-08  Wolf Tones 2-09.

High Noon and High Tension in Clonlara

15/5/2017

Picture
According to Webster's Dictionary the definition of "High Noon" is:
  1. Precisely noon
  2. The time of a decisive confrontation or contest

Well both definitions applied when Broadford met Sixmilebridge’s Intermediate first team (at noon) in their opening match of this year’s Intermediate Championship. This was a game of two contrasting halves. Whilst the first-half seemed somewhat restrained and even docile the second put fire in the bellies of everyone both on and off the field and if not necessarily decisive it was certainly a confrontation.

Darren Chaplin opened the scoring for Broadford with a point from play just seconds in to the match and from then on the match ebbed and flowed and although Broadford maintained a one or two point lead for much of the first-half, neither side seemed particularly in control. Some twenty minutes in, the 'Bridge managed to convert a free to equalise and then after a number of wides for both sides, a point from a 65 put the 'Bridge ahead in the last act of first-half play. Broadford 0-05 SMB 0-06.

Broadford took the first point of the second-half but a red card for Broadford during play around the square six minutes in, fiercely defending the Broadford goal from a direct attack, led to raised tensions all around and set the tone for the rest of the match. After the Bridge won the subsequent free, a second red card just a few minutes later for an off-the-ball incident put Broadford down two men; presenting a tough challenge and a big ask to pull the match back in Broadford’s favour.

Broadford rallied to the cause though and went on to take a further four points coming from play and frees with Diarmuid Moloney's free taking accuracy proving a significant asset under the circumstances. Then a red card awarded to the ‘Bridge 24 minutes in for illegally bringing down a man lessened the gap in player numbers between the two teams to one.

Broadfoard though had already made the allowances necessary and went on to win the match with on a score line of 1-16 to 0-10 with the points coming in the last few minutes of normal time and on in to extra time from Stiofain McMahon, Daren Chaplin, Donie Whelan and Padraig Taylor. The goal came from Shane Taylor in the dying minute of the match after a long pass from Stiofain McMahon.

Goals Make the Match in Win Against Killanena

3/5/2017

Picture
Broadford players and supporters made the scenic drive to Killanena on the evening of Sunday 30th April for their next match in the Intermediate League.

Broadford took the first point from play in under two minutes but conceded a free moments later. Going on though to score one goal from John MacNamara after a cross from John Corcoran, two frees from Corcoran and another from Eoin Donnellan, before a point from Killanena in the ninth minute ended Broadford’s first raid on the score-board. (0-02 to 1-05).

Thanks again to the deadly accuracy of John Corcoran’s free taking and a point from Eoin Donnellan after a solo run down the centre of the field, Broadford again extend their lead by a further four points (0-02 to 1-09).

However, a goal for Killanena in the 17th minute saw the hosts back in the game as they went on to score five straight points, three from play and two frees, to put themselves just two points down at half-time (1-07 to 1-09).

During this lull in Broadford’s fortunes they were denied at least two goals including what would have been a notable goal from corner-back Jack Dillon. After winning the ball in his own territory, a high and long puck sent the ball down the field, only narrowly avoiding the net and hitting the goal post instead.

Both teams then had everything to play for with the throw-in for the second-half. Sparky Whelan and Kieran Considine now on the field scored the first two points for Broadford from play but by 14 minutes in there was just one point between the teams (1-11 to 1-12).

With the scores so close and further white flags to come for both teams, it took two goals, one from Considine in the 16th minute taking his from within the square moments after the ball had rebounded off the post and a second from Whelan in the 24th minute after Considine secured possession after a Mark Moloney sideline ball and passed the ball the short distance to Sparky who was ideally placed for his slam to the back of the net. (1-12 to 3-15).

Two further points for Kilanena and one for Broadford but in a final act of defiance, Kilanena took the very last score of the match, a goal no less, from a 65 seconds before the full-time whistle. Have to also make mention of Jack Kelleher who put himself in the line of fire from an earlier 65 and received a full impact. That must have hurt!

Final score Killanena  2-14 Broadford  3-16.

Just One Point for a Clonlara Win

1/5/2017

Picture
Broadford met Clonlara, in Gurteen, in the U14 Div C Feile Final on Monday 1st May and looking at the strength of the Clonlara panel before the start of the match, you would easily be forgiven for thinking that Broadford were facing an up-hill struggle and the odds were not stacked in their favour.

However, the Broadford boys squared up to the challenge and fought hard for every puck, every step and  for every point.

The boys were down eight points after 16 minutes but clawed their way back to finish the second half with a five point defect.  2-04 to 0-05.

Digging deep and using every lad on the field, the boys turned the game around to a one point lead 13 minutes in to the second half which led to a thrilling last few minutes.

Clonlara evened the score though and then went on to  gain the winning score just seconds before the full-time whistle. Final score Clonlara 2-07 Broadford  1-09.

Whilst the disappointment for the Broadford team and their supporters was palpable, the entire team can be proud of their performance in coming so, so close to beating the odds.

Congratulations though to Clonlara on their win and we wish them well representing Clare in June.
