Broadford met Feakle in the 2018 Intermediate Championship quarter-final in Sixmilebridge on Sunday in what was a truly exciting and intense game.
Before the match started, a minute's silence was observed for Brian Mason from Broadford and late of Australia.
Broadford got off to a cracking start thanks to a goal and one point from Stiofan McMcMahon and a point from Diarmuid Moloney and it was nearly eight minutes in to the game before the opposition put their first score on the board, and then from a free. This was followed by a superb save form Broaford’s goalie J.C McMahon minutes later which must have dented any early expectations that Feakle was going to walk this match. There were moments in the first half where play was halted and this seemed to interrupt the natural flow of the game but perhaps this was just the lull before the storm that was to be unleashed. With everything to play for, the first half ended with Feakle one point ahead Broadford: 1-5(8) Feakle: 1-6(9).
Play around the back lines between the square and corners proved to be the danger area for Broadford and none more so them when a Feakle attempt at a goal in the opening minute of the second half rebounded off the post and back in to play and Feakle launched in on the rebound to take the goal. Following another point from a free for Feakle (1-5 to 2-7) and after fierce play between both sides to maintain possession, Donie Whelan, made a short dash up the field with the ball, went for a goal but after an impressive deflection from the Feakle goalie, Stiofan McMahon swept in to finish the job Donie had started and Broadford’s deficit was now narrowed to two points.
Twenty two minutes in with Broadford taking three more points but conceding two frees to Feakle and with victory a possibility for either team, Broadford made an uninterrupted and impressive run of six points with just one coming from a free and one from play for Craig Chaplin after the ball clipped the left hand post but sailed over the bar never the less . The danger area for Broadford was however regularly visited by Feakle in between but fiercely defended by Sean Phelan and the rest of the back lines.
With Broadford now five points ahead and less than thirty seconds left of regular time to play, the sense that victory was Broadford’s was in the air. In a frantic turn of events though, Feakle took two soft goals in immediate succession in extra time and memories went back the cruel defeat for Broadford when the teams last met during their earlier championship confrontation when Broadford lost by one crushing point. Chance was on Broaford’s side though and a last minute free awarded to Broadford presented a ray of hope and as Padraig Hickey faced up to take the free, Broadford’s supporters held their breath as Hickey held his nerve to send the ball over the bar to send the game in to extra time.
In to the first half of extra time, An early side line for Feakle sent in to the Broadford square and subsequently knocked over the backline gave Feakle the first real scoring opportunity from a resulting 65 but thankfully the ball went wide and Broadford’s Donie Whelan ended up putting the first new point on the board with a score at the end of the fourth minute. This was answered three minutes later with a Feakle point from a 65 and the teams were level again. Feakle suffered a number of wides, two from play and two from 65’s with at least one 65 coming from a near miss around the goal. Having failed to tip the game in their favour so far, it was a goal in the tenth minute which put Feakle ahead by three points.
So with three points between the two sides, the game entered the second half of extra time. With tensions raised to fever point, Broadford added two points in the first four minutes, the first from play from Diarmuid Moloney and the second from a free from Padraig Hickey to bring Broadford again to a one point deficit. Within moments a skirmish broke out on the crowded side line between the dug outs but spirited play soon resumed back on the field. Feakle took a point from play followed by a wide and another point from play and Feakle were once again three points ahead. With just minutes left and what could be mistaken as Broadford’s last chance, the ball dropped to the side of the Feakle square and Shane Taylor and Craig Chapin desperately fought for possession but a final flick off Craig’s hurley brutally sent the ball wide.
In the resulting puck out Chaplin and Taylor again fought for possession and Taylor went down but no free was awarded and the game continued. Donie Whelan scooped up the loose ball but this time it was Donie that met the ground and the needed free was eventually awarded to Broadford.
Cathal Chaplin lined up and with Feakle being encouraged to put all parts of their anatomy on the line, the choice was simple – back of the net or bust. Feakle swelled in the square trying to block every point of possible access for the ball but a low and powerful strike of the ball from Chaplin delivered the ball to the back of the net with terrific effect. The roar from the Broadford crowd must have been heard in Broadford. Feakle and throughout East Clare.
