T’was a Red Rag to a Bull

31/5/2016

Picture
Two more home wins for the Broadford hurlers last weekend.

In the Intermediate League on Friday, the pitch in Broadford was a sea of red and green as Broadford played Corofin.

With Corofin engaging in a fair degree of short passing and sending the ball deep in to Broadford’s back line in multiple attempts to raise the green flag versus Broadford opting for the long puck driving the ball ever up the field  to keep the white flag waving whenever possible; it was match worth watching.

It was not just the red jerseys that were on display however as couple of off-the-ball incidents led to the red card also making an appearance; two for Corofin and one for Broadford. Broadford saw red in the end though and ended the match 1-24 to 0-09.

Broadford had another win in the Junior A competition on Sunday morning, this time against Ballyea.  Final score 3-10 to 1-11.

Well done lads!

Tremendous Display from Broadford U14's

30/5/2016

The Broadford U14’s showed great skill and determination in their semi-final match against Smith O’Brien’s on Saturday 28th May, as this fine team of young hurlers has done throughout the championship competition.

This determination ensured that right up through the first 25 minutes of play in the first half, the boys in green and gold were either ahead or drawing level with Smith O’Brien’s.

A second goal for the opposition, putting them three points ahead, was not still not enough to unsettle the Broadford lads who quickly responded with their first goal to bring the scores level again. A free each thereafter and the teams left the half-time score level. Broadford 1-05 Smith O’Brien’s 2-02.

The second-half could not have been more exciting and tense for the players and spectators alike; for the parishes either side of the Slieve Bearnagh Mountains. Smith O’Brien’s took the lead in the first seven minutes with a goal and points from two frees but for the next 12 minutes Broadford fought back hard with two goals and two frees but a goal in between for Smith O’Brien’s meant that with some six minutes left on the clock, the scores were once again level Broadford 3-07 to Smith O’Brien’s 4-04.

In the end though, Smith O’Brien’s gave a last push to ensure their victory with a point from a 65, a point from play and then a final goal.

Final score Broadford 3-07 Smith O’Brien’s 5-06

The players gave a tremendous performance and whilst a win this time was not to be, the boys are certain of great success in the years ahead.

Broadford Camogie U14's Success on Saturday

24/5/2016

The Broadford U14’s held Clarecastle to a convincing win on Saturday with a final score of 8-03 to 3-00.

The Under 14 B Championship match, which was rescheduled from April,  started well for Broadford who led 6-00 to 0-00 at half-time.  Clarecastle came back fighting in the second-half and much of the match was then played out down the Broadford end of the field but the Broadford back lines were equal in their defense and kept damage to a minimum.

Well done girls!

Goals for Broadford  but a Win for SMB Junior B's

20/5/2016

Broadford played Sixmilebridge on Thursday evening, at home, in their Junior B League match.

By the 13-minute, The Bridge were ahead on score line of 0-03 to 0-06 but a long pass across the field from Eoghan Mason set Anthony Gunning up for a superb goal with the ball slammed to the back of the net from out beyond the 20-metre line.

The ‘Bridge however went on to build up a healthy tally of points. With just a few minutes left before the end of the game and a score line of 1-07 to 0-20, a goal from Willie Wixted taken at close range after the ball was delivered from outfield and fiercely contested for, gave a lift to Broadford and it was cheers all around for Willie’s return from retirement.

The game ended on a final score of 2-07 to 0-21.

Under 14's Camogie Win Against Kilkishen

19/5/2016

Picture
The Broadford U14's achieved a convincing win against Kilkishen yesterday evening in The Mills.

The girls from both teams put in tough performances and the final score does not reflect the energy and determination shown by Kilkishen but well done to Broadford on their impressive tally of goals on this occasion.

Final score 11-04 to 3-03.

Winning Start to Championship for Broadford

17/5/2016

Broadford made a good start in the Intermediate Championship on Saturday evening seeing off their opponents, Killanena, on a score of 1-23 to 1-11. During the first half a run of successful frees from Padraig Hickey helped to neutralise an early Killanena goal and keep Broadford ahead.

In the second half Broadford scores were challenged on two occasions, both off the hurley of Diarmuid Moloney. The first challenge of wide after a point from play taken from the wing around 30-metres out where the ball just narrowly passed between the posts and the second challenge of a square  ball after an initial goal attempt from Padraig Hickey shot from a difficult angle just meters out from the back line. The ball hit the keeper and rebounded back in to play for Diarmuid to rush in to bat the ball to the back of the net. The final decisions, both in Broadford’s favour, contributed to raised tensions and feisty play towards the end of the match with Killanena offering no let up and working hard to keep the pressure on Broadford to the very end.

Broadford Junior Camogoie Semi-Final Win

16/5/2016

Picture
Broadford met St. Joseph’s at home on the morning of Sunday 15th May in the Division 3&4 League Semi-Final. The match was played to a backdrop of blue skies and bright sunshine.

The Broadford team, which has worked hard to galvanise its strengths since last year, came on to the pitch and immediately went on the offensive with a point from Aoife Vaughan in the first minute that signalled the start of an impressive run of scores that went unanswered despite St. Joseph’s best attempts.

Broadford took their tally to 1-07 over 25 minutes until St. Joseph’s finally got their first point from a 45. The teams then traded points each from frees before a goal from Aoife Dillon in the last minute left the Broadford girls with a 12 point lead as they headed to the side lines at half time 2-08 to 0-02.

The second half did not see the same rate of scores as the first but not for the want of effort from both sides.  The St. Joseph’s and Broadford goalies both knocked the ball back in to play after a number of goal attempts and each side was eventually awarded a point each from 45’s for their efforts.

Two final goals for Broadford in the last ten minutes eventually sealed their victory. The first after Aoife Vaughan went on a solo run from around the middle of the field to just in front the St. Joseph 45 line and then sent the ball under the bar and over the goalie’s right shoulder in to the back of the net. The second goal just three minutes later after Katie Moloney and Apryl O’Regan kept the ball in play during some intensive St Joseph’s defence to the left of their goal but managing to keep the ball in play and eventually getting it across the square to the other side for Aiofe Dillon to intercept and send in to the left corner of the net.

The Broadford win was made possible by some great work from the Broadford backs including Samantha O’Connor, Aine Ryan and Siobhan O’Connell who kept retrieving the ball and sending on to the centre and forward ground for the likes of Niambh Mulqeen and Aoife O’Brien who both went on a number of spirited runs up the field driving the ball ever forward for Broadford. Final score 4-09 to 0-3.

Broadford scorers: Aoife Vaughan 1-01, Aoife Dillon 3-6, Moya Marsh McMahon 0-1, Annalee Marsh 0-1

Starting: Aoife Boland; Áine Ryan, Karen Ryan, Siobhan O’Connell; Aoife Vaughan; Niambh Mulqueen; Annalee Marsh, Aoife Dillon, Aoife O’Brien, Caroline Fortune Moloney, Moya Marsh McMahon.

Subs: 1st Half Zoe O’Keefe for Caroline Fortune Moloney; Anna Speight for Aoife O’Brien, April Hogan for Annalee Marsh; Laura O’Connell for Samantha O’Connor. 2nd Half Emer O’Shea for Moya Marsh McMahon, Aine Ryan for Aoife Dillon, Roisin O’Connell for Aoife Vaughan.
