Broadford Hurling Club regrets to announce that James, better known locally as Jimmy, Donnellan of Carrigaline, County Cork, has died.

Jimmy who was born into a renowned hurling family in Lissane, Broadford, played with various parish teams in the 1940s, winning junior and intermediate championships.

Jimmy was the last surviving member of the Broadford team that lost the 1945 senior final to Clarecastle. As a young man, Jimmy Donnellan made and repaired hurleys for his friends in a workshop at the Donnellan homestead in Lissane. Jimmy retained a life-long interest in the fortunes of  his native parish and county.

The club extends it deepest sympathies to Jimmy's family and friends.

Junior Sunday Success

14/6/2016

Picture
Sunday success started when the Broadford Junior B team beat The Banner, at home in Broadford, in their Junior B League match. Final score 1-13 to 0-12.

Broadford then met O’Callaghan’s Mills on Sunday evening in their Junior A League match. Broadford made the better start thanks to a goal in the 12th minute from Sean Doyle that gave Broadford a four point lead, but for a number of wides from play would have extended it further.

Thanks to some really spirited defence, Broadford kept The Mills scoring opportunities down after their first point in the opening minute of play. The groundsman in Kilkishen has his work cut out for him this week fixing the furrow that Sparky Whelan surely ploughed in to the pitch on his many mad dash solo runs after winning the ball deep around Broadford’s back line and taking it down what became a well-worn path before dispatching the ball to his teammates around the midfield and beyond to create further scoring opportunities that helped to hold the score line 0-01 to 1-05 by the 23rd minute.

The Mills went on to take the next four points, with one in response form Broadford, followed by another two points for The Mills to narrow the gap to 0-07 to 1-06 by the end of half-time.

The second-half saw Broadford’s Jack Kelleher and Eoin Donnellan bearing much of The Mills assault at the Broadford goal end but again the work rate across all the back positions kept the ball driving in Broadford’s favour to ensure The Mills could not inflict too much serious damage.

The first and last minutes of the second half were illuminated by goals from Declan Teefy of which the second was one to remember. John MacNamara won the ball from a Mills side line sent from around The Mill’s 20-metre line. Heading for the square he dodged a crowded field before passing the ball to Declan to whack in to the net from close range.

Final score O'Callaghan's Mills 0-13 Broadford 3-10

Nemarket-on-Fergus, Broadford-on-Fire!

11/6/2016

Broadford travelled to Newmarket-on-Fergus on Thursday 9th June to do battle in their next bout in the Clare Cup Division Two League.

Broadford could not have made a better start thanks to a goal from Padraig Hickey, slammed to the back of the net in the first minute of play and this was quickly followed by points from Aonghus O’Brien and Donie Whelan. This quick-fire approach set the pace for Broadford for the rest of the match.

Newmarket-on-Fergus got their first point on the board from a free and this was closely followed by a point from play but Broadford responded with a further three points of their own (two from play and another from a free) to quell the threat.

Twenty two minutes in and Braodford had built up a very healthy looking tally of points with just a further two points in response from Newmarket-on-Fergus.   Newmarket-on-Fergus 0-04 Broadford 1-10.  A goal from Donie Whelan set up by a pass from Darren Chapiln might have suggested that this game had been won before the first half was over but Newmarket-on-Fergus showed they still had something up their sleeve when they scored their only goal of the match minutes later.  The ball which was sent powerfully from play some 25-meters in front of the goal but deflected off the tip of a Broadford hurley and in to the net after what otherwise seemed  was going to be a fantastic block. The half-time score after yet another two points for Broadford was Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-04 Broadford 2-13.

In the second half, Newmarket-on-Fergus might have closed the gap with Broadford as on at least two occasions they came close to scoring goals from play in front of the square but luck was not with them and, as in the case of a number of other point scoring opportunities, wides were the order of the day.  Broadford maintained its domination up and down the field end eventually left the field with a convincing win. Final score Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-10 Broadford 2-22.

Sun and Fiery Action on the Field Raise the Heat in U14 Final

5/6/2016

Picture
In near sweltering conditions Kilkishen was the scene on Wednesday 1st June for the under 14B Shield Camogie Final between Broadford and Clarecastle. The match was one of great expectation as Broadford were in great anticipation having beaten the Magpies only weeks before in an earlier round and the team from Clarecastle were fired up to even the score.

Broadford started their campaign with great vigour and built up an impressive lead with goals scored by Susan O’Shea, Kathy O’Farrell and Beatrice Vaughan. The forward line was supported by a strong defence that kept Clarecastle from gaining real traction in the first half.

In the second half Clarecastle came back on the field with a mission to turn the game around and steadily diminished Broadford’s leading position. A goal though from Emma Spaight set up by great midfield teamwork gave Broadford a two-point advantage.
However, in injury time a free awarded to Clarecastle found the back of the net to put them ahead by a point. With time seemingly standing still and the game still very much on going, the Broadford puckout reached the Clarecastle half of the field. With tensions high and all the players looking for a finish, a late free was awarded to Broadford. As Kathy O’Farrell stepped up for the free, breaths were held as this surely was the last chance for Broadford to stay in the game.

The ball sailed between the posts to shouts of joy from the Broadford supporters. A draw! Final score Broadford 6-04 Clarecastle 7-01.

Well done to all the girls who now look forward to a replay sometime later in the summer.

Thank you to everyone that came along to support Broadford, the turnout was fantastic!
