Back to school for Broadford Minors

19/11/2015

Some of Broadford’s Minor A Champions went back to school this morning, Broadford and Kilbane National School to be exact.

The players from the victorious Broadford/Smith O’Brien team, many of whom attended the same school not so very long ago, paid a visit to meet the teachers and current pupils. School Principal Aonghus O’Brien led the players around the school to meet every class as they took with them the collection of trophies amassed this year, to the delight of the children. The players also answered the children's many questions about their hurling careers to date playing for Broadford.

The visit was a great success and will no doubt help to encourage Broadford’s future crop of champion hurlers and camogie players.

Thank you to the players for taking the time to visit the school.

Victory for Broadford in Under 13B Plate Camogie Final

7/11/2015

Broadford faced Clooney-Quin in the Under-13B Plate Final on the morning of Saturday, 7th November.

Broadford came on to the pitch the stronger side from the off and this was demonstrated by an early point from Clodagh O’Farrell.

Clooney-Quin were aggressive, however, in their rebuttal and ensured there was plenty of action up the Broadford goal end to keep the backs on their toes.

A goal from Kathy O’Farrell in the 13th minute followed by another just two minutes later, tipped in to the back of the net by Claire Heffernan after a long puck down the field from Alexandra Troy, gave Broadford a massive boost of confidence whilst Clooney-Quin were unable to convert their determined efforts in to scores, the ball going wide on a number of occasions.  Half time score 2-02 to 0-00.

The second half was much the mirror image of the first in performance as well as scores. Two more goals, one kicked by Susan O’Shea and another sent in again by Claire Heffernan, and two more over the bar against the embattled but resilient Clooeny-Quin - trying really hard to score but just unable to break through; gave Broadford their final victory with a score of 4-04 to 0-00.

Overall a low scoring game and much to the credit of Broadford’s defence who neutralised Clooney-Quin’s hard work around the Broadford goal at every turn, but in the end Broadford’s experience came to the fore.

Well done to the Broadford girls, their trainers and everyone who has supported the team over the season.

Huge effort from Broadford/Whitegate in U21B Camogie Semi-Final

2/11/2015

Sunday 1st November and Halloween ghouls and spirits banished for another year, the Broadford/Whitegate Camogie U21 team faced an altogether different specter in the U21B Semi-Final against Clarecastle/Ballyea.  The match took place in Broadford on a bright, sunny autumn afternoon.

The first half proved exciting with Broaford’s Aoife Dillon taking the first point a minute in to the match but this was soon answered with a goal for Clarecastle/Ballyea. From then on some intense action was seen at both ends of the field and at all points in between as the teams tried to make the most of their possession.

By the 22nd minute Clarecastle/Ballyea had racked up a healthy score of three goals and three points but with the help of some excellent field work by the likes of Niamh Mulqueen and Aoife Vaughan gaining the ball and driving it down to their forwards, Aoife Dillon was able to keep the deficit down with two more points from play and three from frees sent surely over the bar with great accuracy. Then a goal for Aoife Dillon who drove the ball to the back of the net from 10 or more metres out, sending the Clarecastle/Ballyea goalie to the ground in her valiant attempt to make a save, helped to lift Broadford’s spirits.

It was not long before the ball was back deep in Clarecastle/Ballyea box where Emer O’Shea and Ciara Noonan fought hard to keep the ball in play despite the efforts of a very strong defence and came so close to creating at least one additional goal for Broadford.  In the last few minutes of the first half though, Clarecastle/Ballyea took a point from a free and another from play to end the half 1-06 to 3-05.

If the first half belonged to Broadford in their show of steely determination ensuring they kept themselves in the running with a good flow of scores against a team they knew from the outset would provide the toughest opposition, the second half belonged to Clarecastle/Ballyea.

Eleven minutes in the game and they had routed Broadford’s chances with a run of two goals and two points to create a 13 point deficit; despite Broadford continuing to work hard with every opportunity afforded them. A brief interruption in the Clarecastle/Ballyea rampage gave Broaford another point and a superb goal from Emer O’Shea. The rest bite was brief though and despite a number of goal challenges foiled by Broadford’s goalie Moya Marsh McMahon and the rest of the hardworking defence, Clarecastle/Ballyea secured a further two goals and two points from play to make their victory complete. Final score 3-07 to 7-09.

The sound around the field during the match was peppered with odd whiz-bang of a few Halloween fireworks but this was nothing compared to the explosion of energy and colour of a fine and exciting camogie match in which both teams worked so hard to dominate. Bad luck to the Broadford ladies and congratulations to Clarecastle/Ballyea.
