Third Intermediate League Win for Broadford

27/4/2016

Picture
Broadford achieved their third win in the Clare Cup Intermediate League on Sunday 24th April when they met Smith O’Briens at home in Broadford.

The scene was set after Broadford took their first point from a free in the first sixty seconds of the match.  Both teams were settling down in to play for the next five minutes with the scores reaching 0-03 to 0-03 thanks on Broadford’s part to another free from Padraig Hickey and a point from play from Darren Chaplin. Broadford however then broke away with a straight run of eleven points from players from across the team (Diarmuid Moloney, Aonghus O’Brien, Padraig Hickey, Stiofain McMahon and Shane Taylor), before Smith O’Brien’s added a point to their tally with a free just before the half-time whistle. Half-time score 0-14 – 0-04.

The second half started as the first had with a point going to Broadford from another Hickey free in the first minute and this was closely followed by a further free and two points from play for Smith O’Brien’s.  With the scores at 0-16 to 0-06 any opportunity for the visitors to mount a comeback was dealt a blow with a goal from Donnie Whelan after a pass from Stiofain McMahon and this heralded an eventual victory for Broadford with a score line of 1-20 to 0-10

Broadford will meet Cratloe in their next Intermediate League match on Friday 29th April at 6:30pm in Broadford.

Intermediate League Win Against Inagh/Kilnamona

16/4/2016

Broadford met the Inagh/KIilnamona 2nd team in the second round of the Intermediate League in Broadford on Friday evening. Broadford won the match on an impressive score line of 5-21 to 0-09.

The high winning margin was achieved thanks to some great team work that saw the ball sent over the bar from near and far positions on the field. Impressive team coordination was responsible for continuously seeing the ball passed from player to player to create many of the scoring opportunities.

From Cailean Cox’s winning possession of the ball in the Broadford backline running, up the field and hand passing the ball long across the field to Eoin O’Brien who then pucked it up to Darren Chaplin for delivery in to the back of the net; Padraig Hickeys slam to the back of the net from 20m after receiving the ball from the wing and the final goal of the match from Aonghus O’Brien after a pass from Darren Chaplin . All great examples of the team work that made this match a fine display.

A Memorable Weekend for Broadford

11/4/2016

Picture
Last weekend was a successful and enjoyable one for Broadford Hurling and Camogie Clubs, both on and off the field.

On Saturday the Hurling Club held the Junior B Championship medal presentation in Gunning’s Bar, Kilbane. The medals were presented by our very special guest, Clare Manager Davy Fitzgerald.

It was not just the players who were on the receiving end though. The management, mentors and wider support team for the Junior B and Minor winners also received mementos of the historic club wins and in appreciation from the players.

The club also made a special recognition of its respected long-standing treasurer John Durack. John has made a huge contribution to the club, both as a player and serving on the Executive committee for many years. So, awarding John as Clubman of the Year was a fitting tribute in gratitude from all players and members past, present and future.

After all the official presentations were over there was an additional one to be completed, much to the surprise of the club Chairman, Pat Donnellan. Pat, who turns fifty this week, was presented with a surprise birthday cake from his wife Marie and children Eoin, Catherine and Paddy.

On the pitch the Camogie U18’s team had their first match in the Under 18 B&C Championship. The away match against Éire Óg was played on Sunday in the bitterest of weather conditions.  With a strong and icy wind blowing down the pitch towards the Éire Óg goal, Broadford had the advantage from the off. Despite their very best efforts, the Éire Óg goalie and the rest of the backline were, for most of the time, unable to drive the ball far enough up the field and beyond the strong Broadford midfield and forward lineout. Thanks to goals from Aoife O’Brien and Anna-lee Marsh and additional points from Anna-lee, Moya Marsh McMahon and Zoe O’Keeffe; the teams escaped the field at half-time on a scoreline of 2-04 to 0-0. With perhaps slightly improved weather conditions in the second half, Éire Óg did not get quite the same advantage as Broadford in the first half but were still able to lift their score to 2-02.  However Broadford remained the stronger side and points from Anna-lee Marsh and Aiofe Vaughan and a final goal from Aoife O’Brien ensured a good win for Broadford 3-06 to 2-02.
Then, on Sunday evening, it was the turn of the hurlers from the U14’s in the second round of the Under 14C Championship. The match was played away and against Whitegate. Broadford stole a convincing win even though Whitegate continued throughout the match to put Broadford under pressure and keep the Broadford scoring rate down in the second half. Final score was 1-06 to 4-13.
