Clare Cup win eludes Broadford

21/4/2015

Picture
Broadford travelled to Whitegate on Saturday in search of our first win in the Clare Cup but fell behind by a goal in the first minute. Cathal Chaplain responded with a well taken point but we quickly fell further behind with Whitegate scoring two points in quick succession. Craig Chaplin then scored two points to leave us trailing by two.

Whitegate pointed a free before Padraig Hickey scored twice to reduce the deficit to one point on 20 minutes. The game ebbed and flowed  for the next fifteen minutes with Donie Whelan, Darren Chaplain and Craig Chaplain all raising the white flag. However Whitegate scored two points from frees and three from open play to leave us trailing by 1-08 to 0-08 points at half time.

Playing with a string wind in the second half we scored two quick points without reply. Stiofan McMahon, who had come on for injured Sean Phelan, scored one and Donie Whelan the other. However, we then conceded another goal against the run of play. Cathal Chaplain, Padraig Hickey and Eoin O’Brien all scored in the next ten minutes but we couldn’t close the gap as they replied with two frees and an excellent line ball. Eoin Donnellan came on for Danny Reddan half way through the second half. Stiofan McMahon scored a point in the last ten minutes and the game finished 2-17 to 0-18.

We played well against a strong Whitegate outfit but conceding goals early in each half gave us a mountain to climb.

Next up is Eire Og in Broadford next Sunday.

Thanks to Tommy Fahy for providing this week’s comprehensive match report.
